New Boston Seafood, Klang

I have heard so much about this seafood place in Klang. After much buzz about their famous la-la (clam), me and my fiance made a trip down to Klang to savour the much talked about seafood. We arrived at 5.55pm and the shop was yet to open. So we decided to head over to the shop opposite for some ba kut teh, while keeping an eye on New Boston Seafood Restaurant.

The shop opened at 6pm. 10 minutes past 6pm, there were already people flooding the restaurant. We quickly gulped down our ba kut teh and head back to New Boston. News has it that the waiting time can go up to an hour if you arrive late.

The scene at New Boston at 6.20pm. Already there are about 20 tables waiting for their food. The girl in the picture above looks like she waited so long that her tummy start to rumble.

We were joined by our friend, Kenneth who recommended this place to us. After 40 minutes of wait, the first dish finally arrived. Stir fry yam mak vegetables with garlic.

Second dish: Mantis prawn with corn sauce. Another popular choice is mantis prawn fried with nestum.

The mantis prawn is super crunchy and had a sweet savoury taste of corn, garnished with curry leaves.

Then, the siong tong la-la (steam clam in superior soup) came. It is garnished with fried garlic and the soup is infused with Chinese wine taste. The taste is quite strong and if you like the aroma of the wine, this is definitely good! The ginger also help to disperse the raw smell of the clams and adds a slightly spicy taste to the clam.

The final dish came, which is the fried Hokkien mee, a popular choice here. The Hokkien mee was so-so. Many famous Hokkien mee shops can easily top this.

The chef recommendation here are: Prawn mantis, la- la clams and Hokkien mee.

Arrive before 7pm if you don't want to end up waiting for an hour for your food. Overall, it was a very satisfying meal and this place really does cook great seafood. Definitely would drop by again the next time I crave seafood, in particular..the la-la clams.

The total bill came up to RM 52.50 which is really affordable for good seafood.
Good food at affordable price, two thumbs up!

Jalan Kapar Klang, (same row as Lembaga Tabung Haji).

Ba Kut Teh @ Restaurant Chow Kiat, Klang

I have always loved going to Klang. Because it brought many found memories about my road trips down to Klang for work. I used to travel down to different parts of Klang about 20 days in a month for my job. I used to dislike coming here as I felt the place was quite hectic and everytime my parents brought me there for an early meal of ba kut teh, I would drag myself half awake complaining about how far the place was. And I would always go home with a stomach ache as the ba kut teh was too oily for my stomach's liking.

Fast forward to the future, every time I come down here I would find an opportunity to eat ba kut teh with my friends if they happened to be around the area. Best of all, my stomach was no longer sensitive towards the oily ba kut teh.

Yesterday, I popped over to Restaurant Chow Kiat in Klang for another round of ba kut teh. It was served in a bowl instead of the claypot style. More authentic styles of ba kut teh in Klang does not come in claypot.

The pork was not very tender, and had a slight rubbery feel to it when chewed. Soup is oily and sticky. True Klang style. The soup is re-fillable but sometimes, they are quite stingy. They will either ignore your request and show a frowning face, or they will scope only half a bowl of soup for you. Many places in Klang practices this. I guess the logic is not to let you savour too much of the soup so that you won't have too much of it and will be back for more soon.

The bill came up to RM 12.00 for a bowl of ba kut teh for one person. It is really pricey and on the high side.

Address:
Restaurant Chow Kiat
Jalan Kapar Klang- Opposite Lembaga Tabung Haji.

Crispy popiah @ Restaurant Four Eight

I came across Restaurant Four Eight in Damansara Perdana when my mom decided to bring me there for breakfast. She recommend that I try the crispy popiah. Remember the crispy popiah started by Sister Crispy Popiah in Mid Valley? Yup, this is the same type which consist of crispy cubes. The fusion style of popiah.

I ordered 3 types of popiah with the price range of RM 2.00- RM 2.50. I ordered the Crispy popiah, the popiah with seaweed and chicken floss, and the popiah with seaweed and wasabi marinated chicken floss.

Above: The popiah with seaweed and chicken floss.
The seaweed is crispy and it felt like eating a popiah sushi. Fusion indeed. The chicken floss gave the whole popiah a different taste, with the slightly salty taste to it. Indeed special.

Above: Crispy popiah and seaweed popiah with marinated chicken floss

The crispy popiah has some crispy cubes inside and uses the popiah wrapping on the outside. It is ok, but not as good as Sisters crispy popiah in Mid Valley.

The most special popiah would have to be the Seaweed popiah with marinated chicken floss. It tasted similar to the seaweed popiah with chicken floss. Only difference is the chicken floss in this popiah is marinated and mix with wasabi. This adds a nice tingling and slightly spicy taste to the popiah.

I am not a huge fan of popiah, but for something different and fusion, this has got to be it. Healthy and tasty.

SS2 Goreng Pisang

This has been my favourite goreng pisang stall since young. The stall has been running for almost 30 years. They are famous for their goreng pisang and other fritter snacks. Recently, I noticed they even have a website where you can place an order, call to order and hook up with them on Facebook! This stall deserves an A+ for trying to keep connected to their loyal customer base by social media. They even posted on their website about all the different fritter snacks that are available in their stall and are open for catering service as well!

Their specialties are:
1) Pisang goreng (banana fritters)
2) Kuih kodok (mashed banana balls)
3) Kuih bakul lipis with keledek & keladi (Sweet glutinous rice cake layer with sweet potato & yam) or 'lin koh.'

My personal favourites will be in order: 1-3-2.

The other fritters that are available in the stall includes kerepok ikan (in a packet), keledek keping (sweet potato), keladi keping (yam), popiah (spring roll), cucur udang (prawn fritters), kuih kasturi (green bean pancake with coconut), bebola ikan (fish ball) and many more.

There is usually a long queue in the afternoon and during lunch time. I like to frequent this place at about 4.40pm and buy home the fritters as my tea time snack. It is also less pack during this hour.

The store is manned by two elderly women of the Wong family. One will be frying the fritters, the other will be attending to customer orders and pack the fritters.

The huge selection of fried fritters

The goreng pisang are of good quality and taste very sweet. Their goreng pisang and 'lin koh' are fried to golden brown and are so crunchy you could hear it in your mouth! The fritters remained crunchy even till I got home. But of course, I live like a 5 minutes drive away from the stall. Hehe.

The 'lin koh' which is a hot favourite it finish fast!

I remember coming by their stall since young and my mom loves to buy the goreng pisang and 'lin koh.' Heck, the stall is almost as old as me! Or as young as me...hehe.

This is the stall which will make me come back again and again for more. If it's around for another 10 years, would buy some for my kids to savour.

Such a legacy!

Location: SS2/64  (opposite SS2 Alliance Bank or opposite SS2 Pelita restaurant. The white color van is hard to miss!

Uncle Seng Fresh Own Made Noodles

There have been a lot of buzz about this wan tan mee place in SS15, Subang. It is called Uncle Seng Fresh Own Made Noodles. While many have good feedback on this place, there are mixed opinions about it. Well, everyone is entitled to their own taste bud. I went here around 11 am on a weekday and found that there are several tables occupied. It is located nearby the Taylor's Business School in SS15, and few door away the famous pork noodles of Subang.

Once I sat down, I was presented with a order list for me to write down my orders. Funny thing is that there are at least 3 to 4 workers there but all they do is get you to fill in your orders yourself with a half sincere face while the boss just happily sat behind the counter waiting to collect payments. I would prefer the boss to come around to recommend the signature dishes in his restaurant or at least present me with a proper menu.

Anyhow, it seems obvious that the signature dish here is 'Own made wan tan mee.' So that was exactly what I ordered.

The array of sauces to go with the wan tan mee.

The dish took quiet long to serve. 20 minutes. I would expect speedier service as those wan tan mee stalls usually able to serve one plate of wan tan mee in less than 15 minutes.

My cuppa nescafe. My morning wake up call (RM 1.80)

Finally, the main attraction arrived. The noodles doesn't look like the regular wan tan mee noodles.  I guess that is their selling point. It closely resembles the thin pan mee that you get in pan mee stalls. It does not have the black sweet sauce like other wan tan mee stalls. If anything, it taste like hakka mee with the light seasoning of salt and oil. If you like more flavour to it, you can always add the chili sauce and soy sauce. I like mine the original way. The char siew are light in color and taste. It does not have the melt in your mouth feel or slightly burned taste.

                                                             Wan Tan Mee (RM 5.00)

The wanton's filing is quite dense too

The wanton filing is packed, unlike others where is mostly just the skin. They only gave two piece of wanton but its sufficient for the size of it.

Overall, I like the taste of the wan tan mee as it taste like pan mee, which is my personal favourite. The handmade noodles have a chewy feel to it. But for true wan tan mee lovers, this might not make the cut as the style and noodles are different from the conventional wan tan mee.

The bill came up to RM 6.80. No service charge or Government tax.

Uncle Seng's Fresh Own Made Noodles

Khuntai Thai Restaurant

Khuntai which translates to 'Thai people' in Thai, is a very famous and well known Thai restaurant in Jalan Gasing. They have another branch in Desa Aman Puri in Kepong. Many have heard of this place and the food here is famed to be one of the best in town.

After hearing all the rave about the good food here, I find myself heading here for lunch. The place might be hard to find for those uninitiated, it is located nearby the Kaavithas Indian food restaurant. Parking is ample with an empty land opposite the restaurant which many diners parked.

                                                     Entrance to Kunthai Thai Restaurant

Upon entering the restaurant, we were warmly greeted by Thai servers. There are two sections in the restaurant. One with shaded roof which provided more ambiance and the other is an air conditioned section for diners afraid of the heat.

                                                            Bowl of steaming hot rice

The crispy baby sotong (RM 12.00) taste great! It has a hint of spiciness and sweet sauce. Crispy as well.

Next came the mixed seafood tom yum (RM 19.00). It was spicy with the right mix of sourness in it. The seafood array was also good. There were generous portion of seafood inside.

Pak Liang Thai (RM 15.00)- their signature vegetables. It is stir fried with eggs.

You must try the Claypot Glass Noodles with Prawn (RM 16.00). The taste is well infused with black pepper and black sauce. This is absolute perfection!

                                                              Chap Oong Omelet

Chap Oon Omelet- Simple yet delicious.

Chicken Wings- best to go with the spicy chili sauce

The Lemon Steam Fish (RM 45.50), is highly recommended by their staff. It has a mixture of spicy, sour lemon taste to it. The combination of the fresh fish and spicy sour gravy will make you want to eat, eat and eat. And the good thing is, the gravy soup is re-fill able!

Pipping hot fish is cooked with charcoal.

Lastly, we ordered the dessert. Sago milk with chestnut and jack fruit (RM 4.50). Every body's favourite!

The food here is authethic Thai, probably one of the best you can get in town. Friendly service and food does not take too long to be served. Would definitely be back for more!
